Senior inspector Anu Toppila's master's thesis on waste flows of electric and electronic equipment as well as portable batteries and accumulators has been completed.

The objective of Toppila’s survey was to determine how much electric and electronic waste as well as portable accumulators and batteries are directed outside of the official recycling systems.

The study shows that as much as 40–50% of WEEE material does not end up in recycling. A considerable part of it goes to outside actors who do not belong to the official recycling system. Also, households are still disposing of some devices in mixed waste.
