SERTY’s service organization is based on co-operation between several sectors. To the consumer, the most visible part of the system is the collection points, where the consumer can return waste electrical and electronic equipment for further treatment.
SERTY takes care of the recycling of the WEEE materials that are the responsibility of its member businesses. SERTY’s operation maintains the recycling system of WEEE equipment, where the recycling services offered by the public and private sectors unite the consumer, business and society in a useful and cost efficient collection, recycling and reutilization system.
SERTY is a non-profit organization supervised by the authorities, which all of the businesses involved in the manufacturing and importation of electrical and electronic equipment can join.
The recycling system for waste electrical and electronic equipment based on producer responsibility has been in operation since 2005. Recycling in Finland took off well already in the first year. SERTY collected 3.78 kilograms of electrical and electronic equipment per inhabitant during the first year. The equipment collected via SERTY ry’s system almost fulfils by itself the minimum objective set by the legislation. The system, that is built to be cost efficient, has thus quickly shown its functionality.
In 2006 the result also exceeded the collection target; 21 420 tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment, which means 4.12 kilograms per inhabitant in Finland.
